Submarine Cinematography work

 cinematography - the 'photography' of the camera. Therefore the camera shot sizes, camera moves and general composition.


Joanne, in the image above is captured in a close up, low angled shot suggesting Oliver is looking up at her and admiring how perfect she is in his head and as she is the only thing in this shot that is focused this suggests that Joanna is the only noticeable thing, in his eyes, that matters because he likes her so much and wants her to like him back. The fact that she is the only thing that is visible means as audience members we can see what Oliver sees from the angle of the camera this means we also see an insight on how Oliver sees her in his head. This suggests to us that he is in a complete trance with love for him. Her features are all of a dark mood, she has dark eyes with dark hair and dark clothing she is stood carefree and confident. which also suggests she feels relaxed and comfortable when being around him, this camera angle allows us to see this and get an insight of the character. Joanna not making eye contact with the camera in this shot allows us to assume that she is looking at something else other than Oliver and he is just gazing at her.

Oliver, in the image above is caught in a wide, eye level shot in a day dream, although there're other students that are all focused in this shot immediately as an audience we are drawn to him because he is in the centre, the classroom in which he is seated, it has blue all around it, the camera shot allows us to see the whole of the room as it is wide. He is day dreaming about something which is clearly affecting the way he's thinking because of the composition that he is sat, the camera captures this perfectly. Another element is we see that he is looking into the light and it's coming from the way he is looking, which could also imply that he is looking into the light, considering the blue and the name of the film being submarine could mean that it he is drowning in water (the blue) and he is then being pulled back up to the top again and seeing the light as he gets his head above the water. The angle that the shot is taken at suggests that the audience is in the classroom and the shot has been taken over a students shoulder. This is to make the audience think about the classroom environment.
